In the midst of the most stressful time in my life, I had to be strong for my son and help him overcome the obstacles he would face in the coming months. The experience put everything in perspective and made me grateful for the wonderful people I have in my life.
Nothing could have prepared me for this. In 2020, my son, Christian, was hit by a van while riding his bicycle. As a mother, there is nothing more difficult than seeing your child go through a painful experience. The following 103 days were a blur as I watched him recover in the ICU and go through rehabilitation.
Despite the overwhelming stress, I tried to stay positive and hold on to my faith. I was incredibly grateful that my daughter and I could visit him, despite the COVID restrictions at the time.
Christian has Down syndrome and needed someone there to help coordinate with the medical staff, but more importantly, he needed our support.
My daughter and I took turns visiting him at the hospital, rotating every couple of days to make sure he knew we were there for him. We tried our best to make him comfortable and keep his head up through the difficult process of recovery. It was a challenging time, but I was grateful for the support of my friends and community.
When my son finally came home in a wheelchair, it was one of the happiest days of my life. As we drove up to our home, the street was lined with balloons. Our home was filled with cards and decorations from our neighbors. We held a big celebration party for his recovery – over 100 people came to visit and see how he was doing. I will never forget the outpouring of love and support from everyone that day.
Even though that time in my life was incredibly hard, it also made me realize how deep our roots in the community are. Everyone came together and showered us with well wishes when we needed them most. Having that strong sense of support is what got me through that period.
Before I had my kids, I moved away from my hometown in Ohio to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. I went from Colorado to California and then Arizona – I was having a great time exploring new areas and finding my way in life. Through trial and error, I learned that I enjoyed sales and that I was good at it.
I started in real estate, thinking it would be fun, and found a career I love. While living in Colorado, I helped sell in areas popular for tourists. It was a dream to help people find their vacation spots while also enjoying the incredible outdoor lifestyle of Colorado. Eventually, I moved to Arizona, where I had my two daughters, Natalie and Courtney. My time in Arizona didn’t last long, but I knew I wanted to continue doing real estate wherever we went next.
In 1995, I returned to Ohio where it was great to be surrounded by my family again and have that constant source of support that included my nine siblings. Once I had Christian, I had three children to care for, all while building my real estate career here in Ohio. It was a lot to handle at once, but my family was always willing to lend me a hand when I needed extra help. It has been rewarding serving the same community that has offered me so much support over the years.
Christian’s accident was an emotional and overwhelming experience, but it also showed me just how beautiful our life is. I have learned that even in hard moments, something good will always come out of it. For us, it was a reminder of the love that surrounds us. In my free time, I enjoy going for walks in the park, hiking, swimming, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.
